Expedition North Oak Cliff – A Monumental Experience
By On September 26, 2012 · Leave a Comment

I first discovered the “fast food chain” Burguesa Burger a few years ago when I was exploring the little known underground tunnels of downtown Dallas. It was about lunch time when I rounded a corner to find an area of the tunnel resembling a mall food court. It was there I first saw it. It looked glorious; Classic American burger blended with traditional Mexican flavors. But due to the large crowd and long line I continued spelunking, figuring I would try it another day when I just happened to be under Renaissance Tower in a tunnel again. Okay, obviously my logic was flawed and as a result I all but forgot about that amazing creation I had once seen. Forgot that is until a few days ago.

Exploration is one of my favorite past times, hence the underground tunnels connecting downtown Dallas. My favorite, perpetual expedition is of course the quest for new and wonderful places to eat. My favorite terrain to explore? You guessed it. Oak Cliff!

Get outside of the Bishop Arts district and most people have terrible misconceptions of Oak Cliff. Most never consider the area north of interstate 30, North Oak Cliff, as a destination for anything. Those people are idiots. There are lots of great things to see, do and eat in North Oak Cliff as well. Take for instance the best fast food/diner-esque burger joint I’ve ever been to. First discovered in the cavernous underground of downtown, now spotted living and thriving in another habitat – in none other than my favorite neighborhood of Oak Cliff – there is was – the original Burguesa Burger.

It’s located so very conveniently at 710 Fort Worth Avenue in Dallas (corner of Ft. Worth Ave and Sylvan). There you will find the most delicious, most creative burger franchise that puts ALL others to shame. Forget In and Out, forget 5 Guys, forget any and all other burger chains. To do so, all you need to know is two words – La Monumental.

La Monumental is their signature burger. It consists of two beef patties, two slices of cheese, a stack of ham, sliced avocado, refried beans, a crunchy tostada, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a creamy special sauce on a bun garnished with a skewered jalapeño.

Compliment any burger with their famous spicy fries served with a side of spicy dipping sauce. (I’m pretty sure it’s chipotle ranch and it’s fucking awesome.)

You’re going to need to wash this stuff down. Well I know you typically love it as you are force fed it every day, but do not count on ingesting any high fructose corn syrup here. Burguesa Burger has created their own unique fountain drinks all made from natural, pure cane sugar! Or perhaps you’d rather have a hand dipped and mixed strawberry, chocolate or vanilla milk shake, straw skewered with a donut!! Plus…and this could be the deal sealer…they serve beer.

Desert? How about crispy churros filled with dulche de leche? Get ‘em for a buck fifty.

So you see what I mean. Stop going to the same old strategically placed chains you’ve been conditioned to. Take and adventure. Go somewhere for taste. Go somewhere for individuality. Go and support a great Dallas neighborhood. Go to Burguesa Burger.
